With all due respect, its not like guys get a fair shake, either. Who are you more then likely to see portrayed in a video game; John Candy or Vin Disel?

ok this is a wakeup call for you lazy fat american cellulited girls. get your lazy asses off the couch instead of sitting here worrying about a video game. and yes if you open up a magazine called "victoria secrets" you will see very sexy girls who are not lazy and hit the gym to maintain those bodies. it sounds like to me a bunch of fat 250 pound lazy women had nothing better to do then sit around a coffee table eatting bon bons and stuffing their faces with twinkies. Jenna jameson dont give up your day job of spreading those legs and taking it in every hole. a video game is purely entertainment. give it a Fn rest.

When guys play a game they want to play as a cool looking bad-ass, it never occurs to us that the character is completely different from the average male. For some reason women compare themselves to the female characters they see in games. If men compared themselves to the male characters in games or even men in movies we would be constantly depressed. There's no need for anyone to compare themselves to a video game character, they're not even real. I do agree that their should be more representations of what people are really like, for both male and females, but exaggerated masculinity and femininity are here to stay.

Kalell: I think some women may compare them, but you know, in some ways we pick who we play because they WILL BE representing us. I know when I was playing one of the earlier DOA's, I played Christie because she had this teal and white jumpsuit AND it was the only outfit in the whole game I would actually wear. It looked kinda Emma Peel. Everything else looked just tacky...like a bad Frederick's of Hollywood catalogue come to life.
And in a lot of cases, it's not that we girls are comparing ourselves, but that other people are comparing us. Witness the comments over Tyra Banks, who still looks fabulous, but just not as skinny. Guys are ripping her on being a "fatty". I mean, wtf?
Videogamemania: In today's society a woman doesn't need to be 120 pounds overweight to feel insecure. I used to weigh 105 pounds fully clothed, and there was still cellulite on my butt. It's a natural part of being a woman, but magazines and movies airbrush that stuff out.
Also, a woman can't be as stick-skinny as those girls in DOA are and have boobs that size. Boobs that aren't augmented grow and shrink as the rest of us does. Small butt and thighs = small boobs. The fat doesn't just stick to one part.
Also, if you haven't seen the Dove ad Evolution, you should take a look. It shows how real woman get made up, groomed, and then digitally altered in post-production to get looking like a model. Video game girls never have to eat, never have to exercise, and were made to look like post-production women right from the start. It's not a matter of getting off our "lazy asses".

Oh, Kalell: I meant to add that I wish they would show more diversity in male forms as well. The bulked up beefcake guy is just as annoying as the small butt-big chested girls. (Plus, I like my boys on the skinny side, and do I ever get any eye candy? Noooooooo.)

It really just comes down to the basics. Sex Sells. Just take a look at Dead or Alive 1 and the original Tomb Raider. The breasts in DOA1 bounced worse than they do in Dead or Alive Xtreme 2. Lara Croft was depicted in short shorts, low cut shirts, and a perfect body all together. But the thing is, would you rather play as an ugly/fat girl? I'm not trying to be discriminatory, I'm just stating a fact.
Tomonobu Itagaki has stated in interviews that it's only natural to want to play as someone beautiful. I'm a hardcore Dead or Alive fan. I don't play the games because they contain scantally clad women, I play them because I enjoy the gameplay and characters. I mean, if Dead or Alive was an ALL WOMAN fighter, then I'd agree that it's a shallow game. But there are men fighters in the game as well.
As for Dead or Alive XBV/Xtreme 2, I agree, they are shallow games. I, in addition to most hard core DOA fans, enjoy the DOAX games for the collection aspect, not so much the thongs and V-suits. I can't change anyone's views on the game series, it's their opinion. But you should note, Dead or Alive 4 is one of the most popular games played on Xboxlive. It's also much more complex than past DOA games, evolving into a deeper fighting game with each entry. So, in closing, I just want to let those who stereotype DOA fans know, we don't play the (fighting) games for the visuals, we play them for the gameplay.

Ahhh the old "I read Playboy for the articles" excuse....you gotta love that

That was a great, informative article. I can see how some women feel objectified by the video game culture, and to some extent I agree with them. I'm sorry, but breasts DO NOT move like that in real life. In DOAX, they practically have a mind of their own, wondering all over like their filled with helium. I also agreee with ZeeMosquito, normal women can be, and are, ten times sexier then those chicken head toothpicks in DOAX. I mean, my god, those women don't even have hips ! How can one love a women without hips?

Who gives a crap about what the womens say wasn't these games were made for men to enjoy and not females unless they are lesbians, so really they shouldn't care about how these girls look on games

My question to women who feel misrepresented in video games, is WHO doesn't? Whether it be cliche racial stereotypes, bodily proportions or culture clash. This happens in all forms of media. Do you think the stars of your favorite tv show got their job because they DON'T look attractive in tight, revealing clothing? And do you think the average male then expects their girlfriend to strive to look like a life-size Barbie Doll? Sure, there are a few guys out there that may be that jaded, but we're not all sitting in front of our tv screens watching digital sweater puppets sway in the slightest breeze. Me, on the other hand, I could care less. As to ZeeMosquito saying us video game players choose characters that represent us, so we go for how we would project ourselves, I can assure you, anytime I used to pick Blanka in Street Fighter, I never did so because I wished that I were a green hunchback with wild, crazy orange body hair. I wouldn't want to be Joe Schmoe Regular like I am in real life, that can't even successfully string together 20 push-ups. I want to be someone fantastic and exciting and visually appealing. In essence, this practice can be sort of an escape. In the end, until people tune into television with ugly people, other than day-time talk shows so they can laugh at them, this problem will be eternally perpetuated. In a sense, if you've ever uttered the words, "(Insert random actor/actress) is so hot!", you've perpetuated the problem yourself. And there's not a man or woman on this earth that can claim to have never uttered those words.

I like to watch this video with the volume turned all the way down...

Yes, a lot more resources need to be put into this. Honestly games are need more sex in them and less blood. Funny how a little nip gets an M rating while blood has to get to the extreme of severed heads and such rate to the same.Posted at: 02/12/07 at 8:29 AM PST
The important difference is that you don't have games made designed to attract female gamers with idealized body builder men. Yes, both sexes should be represented fairly, but the way women are portrayed is more problematic because it can cause men to have very unrealistic expectations.Posted at: 02/17/07 at 12:33 AM PST
Somone needs to make a DoA bikini style game with jiggle physics but they are zombies and eat people and throw grenades.

I agree With Everything Gamesmania Said..... I think videogames are due for Porn Games !!! REal good ones too !!

Look the industry is trying to make games hot. most women don't act or look like that. BUT ITS A GAME, MEANT TO ENTERTAIN, NOT TO MAKE A STATEMENT. As for the male diversity common. I know every guy wants to save the world, but do you think a 5'7, 220 pound guy going to run 100 yards to stop the villain from pressing the button in 20 seconds? Games are supposed to draw you into a fantasy world while show some credit

Doesn't look like many "ladies" posted... The DOA girls are a male fantasy - that is all. Yes, it is a little annoying that good combat games that do feature women (ie DOA) have to have them with the impracticalities that men seem to adore. I think the problem is there are so few games that consider women and girls as serious gamers - or attempt to include them in their advertising demographic - or even at the r&d stage. That is probably what annoys me most ( as a female gamer) not that the girls are pretty, but that the idea of bouncing breasts does not appeal to me in the least, in fact it is a turn off since as a female that appears so impractical. Otherwise, I kinda like the idea of fighting with female characters.

Let's face it: most games are made for men. Men love eye candy, perhaps not as much as women, but recall the previous sentence. Most people who make games are men. So they know what we like. And they are just that: games! Just like movies, are
Should I get depressed that every male depicted in 300 is built like a tank with a six-pack? No. Because I know that it is not realistic. And also: half of this footage was from other games, mainly Tomb Raider and Rumble Roses.Posted at: 07/18/08 at 7:20 AM PST
