Net Ten: The Ten Best Apocalypses in Gaming (page 1) Subscribe to this RSS feed

Shows like Heroes and Jericho are only realizing now what gamers have know for years... that the Apocalypse is freaking awesome. We've compiled the ten best instances of Armageddon and posted them from out of our top-secret bunker.

#10 Halo - [ Xbox ]

Okay, so the inclusion of Halo's Legendary Mode ending isn't exactly dealing with the end of Earth (though who knows where Halo 3 will take the story). Rather, it's the massive destruction of the Halo space station. Also, the ending has officially been declared non-canon. That doesn't change the fact that the gigantic explosion was enough to scare a grizzled war veteran into embracing an alien creature. Hey--potential Armageddon makes for strange bedfellows.

#9 Fallout - [ PC ]

A unique twist on the standard RPG, Fallout takes place after the Apocalypse. Instead of your run-of-the-mill "save the world" storyline, Fallout's protagonist is simply trying to ensure the survival of himself and his community. The world is arid and depressing, and the quest to find water is much more difficult than it sounds. It's like Waterworld... but fun.

#8 Left Behind: Eternal Forces - [ PC ]

As far as apocalypses go, Left Behind's is not too bad. As per Rapture guidelines, all of the righteous head on up to Jesus' place, while the sinners get to share what's left of Earth. Worldwide kegger! Actually, the world of Left Behind is pretty grim, with rock bands and stem-cell researchers killing the semi-religious. Only Kirk Cameron can save the world now...

#7 Final Fantasy VII - [ Playstation ]

Right until Advent Children went and mucked it up, FFVII's ending was a great gaming representation of the Apocalypse. Quite simply, the Earth was pissed, and decided to eliminate its biggest problem--people--leaving the planet to its more reasonable inhabitants; talking animals. As it turns out, the world survived the traumatic events at the conclusion of the game, but it did make all of the kids on the planet sick. Not quite the end of the world, but it's still pretty bad.

#6 Hellgate: London - [ PC ]

The upcoming MMORPG Hellgate : London depicts an Apocalypse where Hell's inhabitants overtake the Earth, which has its good and bad aspects. While it's refreshing to find out that it's not our fault the world's ending, demons and hellions can be pretty darn rude. One thing's for sure... it's certainly going to be an interesting online world to inhabit once the game releases.
