This game is just what the video game industry needed. An action packed, old-school adventure that reminds veteran gamers of the days when it was gameplay over graphics. I mean, even the story is classic. Fight monsters! Defeat evil guy who betrayed you! Rescue Queen! The graphics are top notch, and the old Ghouls 'n Ghosts music works well. This game is really hard, and packs that same frustation you got back when you were playing the original Mario games, like "Can I really jump that far?" or "Is that little platform big enough for me to land on?" Many of the monsters require different strategies to beat, not all are killed the same "hit square button and he's dead" way. The bosses look cool, and are fun to fight. They also, require a certain pattern to defeat. I thought the boss battle with the second world boss was especially fun. I have one complaint. Why is it so short? Only 5 worlds! I distinctly remember there being 8 worlds in Super Mario Bros. 3, a game that is more than 10 years older than Maximo. All in all, a great game that you need to buy if you're old enough to remember what a goomba is.
