Blog Post: EA and Activision exchange fightin' words Subscribe to this RSS feed

The battle for third party supremacy reaches new levels with EA speaking about Activision's latest acquisition.

EA on Warcraft:

EA on Warcraft: "Meh."

Just when you thought the third-party pissing contest had reached its apex, Electronic Arts has thrown down the gauntlet. When Activision and Vivendi Games merged to form Activision Blizzard, it expects to generate more revenue now then EA. Next-Gen reports that EA has welcomed the challenge:

"...We're always at our best when we have a clearly defined competitor," said an EA rep. "[The Activision/Vivendi merger] doesn't change our strategy. Our CEO John Riccitiello has been encouraging senior managers to think of all other publishers as one large competitor--he's been encouraging them to think like challengers."

Next-Gen also states that EA is interested in the MMO realm. With the acquisition of Bioware and Pandemic, rumors surfaced that a Star Wars Mmo could be planned. Now that World of Warcraft is under Activision Blizzard, it's become the defacto leader of the MMO realm.

New developments are always interesting between these two publishers. Both are constantly battling it out in the same genres, which has led to some impressive games thus far. EA has Battlefield, Skate, and Rock Band while Activision Blizzard has Call of Duty, Tony Hawk, and Guitar Hero. With the merger and EA acquiring Bioware/Pandemic, it surely will be exciting to watch what these two gigantic companies have in store for 2008.

Hey, thanks: Next-Gen
