Blog Post: Activision-Blizzard Merger: Awkard Name, Awesome Games? Subscribe to this RSS feed

The console world's biggest publisher and the PC world's biggest developer join forces. What does it mean for the industry?

That's such an uber-merger.

That's such an uber-merger.

In a strange twist, the current number one publisher, Activision, has merged with Vivendi Games to create Activision Blizzard. GameIndustry.biz reports in detail how the merging creates the largest video game publisher now:

"Activision and Vivendi Games are to merge, becoming the world's largest independent videogame publisher, in a deal valued at USD 18.9 billion. The new company, Activision Blizzard, now boasts a portfolio bursting with some of the top-selling videogame franchises including Blizzard's World of Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo, Vivendi's Crash Bandicoot and Spyro and Activision's Guitar Hero, Call of Duty and the Tony Hawk series."

Blizzard is a division within Vivendi Games, and for those wondering how it will affect the company; Blizzard reports "there will be no changes in the way Blizzard operates. "on its website. World of Warcraft fans can breathe a sigh of relief.

With this Activision becoming even larger, let's hope its quality of games do not suffer. Gamers often note Electronic Arts became to big for its own good. As long as Activision Blizzard can keep producing quality titles, gamers shouldn't have anything to fear. Although, the name could use a little work though.

Hey, thanks: GameIndustry.biz
