Blog Post: Patches: They Look Ugly on Consoles Subscribe to this RSS feed

Remember when patches were only the bane of PC gamers? We've uncovered a rash of recent patches, and it looks ugly.

Unwatchable, even with a patch.

Unwatchable, even with a patch.

The introduction of the hard drive onto consoles has been a blissful addition as well as an aggravating one. And with it has taken one step further into the PC realm one would have never expected too; the patch job. On an editorial take, Denton Jerome of AdvancedMN takes notice of the current patch work on consoles while reporting on the problems of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008:

"Why does it seem like there are patches being released left and right for games released on the PS3 and Xbox 360? This kind of stuff seriously bothers me. Why can't developers iron out all of this stuff before shipping the game out to retail?"

Recently Joystiq reported that " rel="external" target="_blank">Assassin's Creed would receive a patch, and before that: Rock Band, Call of Duty 4, and Guitar Hero III. All of these are big time games receiving updates and tweaks. Developers have seemed to follow PC's motto this generation: release it now, and patch it later. Even now, console gamers has come to expect patches now. It has become a disturbing trend among developers how quality control can so lenient.

With the strong presence of online connectivity, and integrated hard drives into the console, it seems to have become a popular trend among console developers. It all revolves back to Jerome's question: "Why can't developers iron out all of this stuff before shipping the game out to retail.?"
