GameDaily reports a study commissioned by the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) proves that the video game industry is not only extremely successful, but an integral part of the United States economy. The study, aptly named, Video Games in the 21st Century: Economic Contributions of the U.S. Entertainment Software Industry looked at the relative growth of the gaming industry over the past several years as well as an estimate of the number of employees and their average income.

The results show that between 2003 and 2006 the industries annual growth grew to over 17 percent. To put that number in context, the total US economy grew only 4 percent during the same period. The study also showed that, in 2006, the industry supported over 24,000 employees who's average income was $92,300. If you include indirectly employed individuals (I think that includes me) the number of employees increases to $80,000 with a total annual compensation of $2.2 billion. What's more is that in the same year the industry added $3.8 billion to the United States Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Michael Gallagher, CEO of the ESA comments:

"Computer and video game companies play an ever increasing role in our nation's growing economy. These companies and their colleagues across the nation are making entertainment software one of the fastest growing industries in the United States."
