Blog Post: Half Life Episode 3: Unknown and Ambitious Subscribe to this RSS feed

With the release of the Orange Box, gamers are getting antsier than ever about the next chapter in the Half-Life saga. We've found out why Valve's been so tight-lipped about it.

Half-Life 2: Episode Two left us with an explosive, emotional cliffhanger without a trailer to expect in the final chapter of Episode Three. In an interview with Rock, Paper, Shotgun Half-Life 2 lead programmer David Speyer explained why there was no trailer for Ep. 3, and how Valve is approaching it:

SPOILER: In Episode 3, Gordon's glasses break.

SPOILER: In Episode 3, Gordon's glasses break.

"We deliberately left that out for a number of reasons. One was we didn't want to dilute the moment of the ending. I think if you'd watched the credits roll and then this high action Episode Three trailer came on, you wouldn't quite feel the same. Another reason was to leave us open on Episode Three. We're going to try and do something pretty ambitious for that project. We don't want to over commit. If you look at the Episode Two trailer that we shipped with Episode One there's some pretty radical difference between what you see there and see in finished game. That's really an artifact of making a trailer for a product that's still in heavy production. You just don't know where you're going to end up."

When it's coming from Valve, we never know what to expect. And that's a good thing. The unresolved conclusion at the end of Episode Two most likely left us with one thing on our minds. Revenge.

With each installment, it seems that more and more questions are presented then answered. Episode 3 is the epic conclusion to the Half-Life 2 Story arc. The chilling finale of Gordon Freeman's adventure will come to a close. The question that remains is what does Valve have in store for our silent protagonist?

Hey, thanks: Rock, Paper, Shotgun

Ooooo... Just thinking about the Combine makes my blood boil. No other game has left me more emotional than HL: Ep. 2 and that includes FF7. Valve did a fantastic job on Episode 2. I will even go on record and claim Half-Life is the best shooter Ive ever played. The storyline, the emotions, the sense of urgency. Great game!

The Combine are going to get their comeuppance. They are not going to get away with what they did... ooohhh they should have finished off Gordon Freeman when the had the chance. Comeuppance, you hear me Combine, comeuppance! Just wait til Episode 3.

Aperture Science is mentioned as being in Episode 3. Are we gonna get our hands on a portal gun?
