1UP takes a look at the new features of the upcoming NiGHTS game for Wii. Will they make a marked improvement over the original classic?
Will the Wii's NiGHTs be worth staying up for?
To kick off its week-long feature highlighting Sega's upcoming NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams on Wii, 1UP has put together one of the most detailed previews of the title yet, highlighting some of the extra features the game will offer. One of the most exciting new details is of the game's online mode:
Race Mode -- also known as "the online one" -- pits two players against each other to see who can finish a level first. You fly through yellow rings to build up "dash power" to boost forward (or the occasional more potent green rings for extra power), and try to avoid spike rings along the way. One player controls NiGHTS while the other takes the reins of longtime enemy Reala.
The preview does express some dismay at the inclusion of platforming elements in a game that stresses flying above all else... otherwise known as Starfox Adventures syndrome:
From what we've seen thus far, the standard flight levels are on their way to matching the original game's quality (with floatier controls), but we're less confident in the newer elements -- running around collecting balls as Helen doesn't seem to be nearly as fun as performing aerial tricks as NiGHTS. And some of the side features don't seem fully fleshed out -- My Dream doesn't look as visually appealing as the standard game, for instance.
While the preview delivers a hefty amount of information, we wish it could have delved deeper into the lack of motion control, particularly in some of the less action-based features like My Dream. While it may be old hat for fans of the game, someone new to the series who's happened upon the highly-promoted story might wonder why it's not a part of a Wii title. Furthermore, it spends a bit too much text explaining My Dream, which will appeal to only a small faction of NiGHTS fans as opposed to the multiplayer features that will likely appeal to more gamers.
With 1UP's NiGHTS week still popping out new features, we're hoping we'll find out more about the central features and whether the game will be worth buying. While the original may be a forgotten classic, what was good for 1995 won't cut the mustard 12 years later.
