After a week on Japanese store shelves, sales figures are being reported for Super Mario Galaxy. How well is it faring?
Mario's getting pwned by sales figures
Super Mario Galaxy hit stores last week on November 1st for the folks over in Japan. It is the console's biggest game aimed at the core audience yet. And CVG (via Ameblo) is unimpressed with its first day sales:
"According to Japanese site Ameblo, Mario's big Wii outing has shifted 130,000 copies in its first day of release in Japan, which is a bit unimpressive for the console's biggest "hardcore" release to date. Sure, we never expected it to reach the sales heights of nan and girl-favourites Wii Sports and Wii Play, but going by the same sales data it's not even doing much better than Zelda: Twilight Princess."
Twilight Princess sold roughly 139,000 copies its first two days, on the Wii, according to GamesAreFun. VGChartz lists Twilight Princess having sold 521,580 copies altogether in Japan. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in May, Miyamoto even discussed his disappointment with the modest sales in Japan:
"Well, I think a lot of people who bought the Wii are not necessarily the types of people who are interested in playing that kind of game. And a lot of the people who would want to play it [due to chronic shortages of the console] can't find a Wii! But mostly, I think it's that there are fewer and fewer people who are interested in playing a big role-playing game like Zelda."
With Super Mario Galaxy's beginning sales similar to Twilight Princess, CVG could be correct in its prediction. With Nintendo claiming the Wii's install base is a majority of casual gamers, this could haunt them in the future. If sales continue to be sluggish, what does this mean to Nintendo's big games? Will Nintendo change its strategy to cater to more casual games in Japan? Can Nintendo somehow make its audience branch out from the casual games? These questions has plagued the Wii within the industry right now, but the day is young with over 3 million potential buyers for Super Mario Galaxy.
Hey, thanks: CVG, Entertainment Weekly

Wow could it be that Nintendo actually outsmarted itself this time? It's definitely possible for a product to be too innovative for a market. Remember the Atari Jaguar? Even if Galaxy fails I think Brawl will be the ultimate test.

This is totally expected though coming from vgchartz. If this is all we'll have to go with from now on, may God have mercy on us all. CIf you call vgchartz a reliable source you are probably keen on using pre used condoms or tossed away syringes.
