Blog Post: Wii Want A Hard Drive! Subscribe to this RSS feed

We already know the Wii isn't HD-friendly, but why can't it be HDD-friendly? Check out what Nintendo had to say about a Wii hard drive.

Dr. Mario doesn't have a cure for what ails Wii Ware.

With an ever-growing library on the Virtual Console, and Wii Ware launching next year, Nintendo faces some problematic challenges with the Wii's limited storage capacity. In an interview between Wired News and soon to be ex-Nintendo Employee, Perrin Kaplan, Wired News asks about the storage situation. Here is Kaplan's response:

"I think that Nintendo loves to have a really clean approach to what they're doing, and the idea is to not have too much of a packrat syndrome, where you've got so much stuff stacked up that... you want to just have products that you're actually going to continue to use. Virtual Console's a really good idea. And it's on the server, so one Chris Kohler purchases it, it's always his. You can download it again. So it's a matter of what do I want to play today. I think we also did the tradeoff: for the price, the size, the flexibility of the system, for us to do all kinds of things. Instead of having a huge box."

While being able to download an already purchased game again is nice, deleting and re-downloading is more of a hassle than it is a solution. Adding more frustration is the fact that Wii is unable to play games off of the SD cards.

Wired News did reiterate the question in which Kaplan said, "We're always talking.". This a glimmer of hope for some possible changes (i.e. External hard drive, new SKU with more memory, etc), but it's doesn't look like a bright one.

Nintendo is pretty much set on its own ways, and it doesn't look like that this situation will change anytime soon. But with the upcoming Wii Ware program, and a lot of frustrated Wii owners about the storage problem, Nintendo may want to reevaluate its position on the situation.

Hey, thanks: Wired

this will be a problem down the future, I've read that some people already maxed out their memory with all those vc games...Nintendo should have thought better...but in the other hand no console is perfect.

It's not that they haven't already addressed it that's the problem. It's that they're still resisting addressing it. Same with FCs and Voice Chat. Everyone's allowed to make mistakes, but when you ignore your customer's pleas, you should expect to take flak for it. Also, they don't need to release new hardware. One firmware update makes usb drives accessible. People who want extra drive space have it. People who prefer Nintendo's clean form with poor function can keep it that way. No one has to be confused by additional retail offerings. Ditto for bluetooth headsets. It's a pretty limited set that need it today. But between Wii Ware and Neo Geo, it'd be nice to know that Nintendo doesn't actually believe that crap about redownloading being superior. Or about how people don't like to be able to talk to each other while playing coop missions together. Or about how gamers love punching in dozens of 12 and 16 digit codes for connectivity.
