Project Gotham Racing 4 for the Xbox 360 has finally hit the track and so have it's illustrious reviews. Though it seems like yet another notch in the mile-long belt of X360 racing sims, PGR4 sets itself apart with a balance of realism and arcade style play. In this regard PGR4's biggest competitor is it's predecessor, PGR3. Some of the time games like PGR4 can seem like nothing more than add-ons to previously released games. Fortunately for PGR4's sake this does not seem to be the case. This from IGN's UK review:

"This is no mere add-on to PGR3 but, arguably, the game PGR3 should have been. Not bogged down by launch deadlines and corner cutting, Gotham 4 is a fully fleshed-out, beautifully realised culmination of everything great about the series. The result? One of the strongest 360 racers to date."

So far so good. PGR4 has, among other things, a new career mode that emphasizes the players world ranking. There are also motorcycles that add an entirely new dimension to the game. Gamespot describes the motorcycles in PGR4:

Then there are the motorcycles, which make their series debut here. As with the car list, the two-wheeled choices include everything from the relatively modest Buell RR 1200 to the frighteningly powerful MV Augusta F4 Senna. When it comes to handling, the motorcycles in PGR 4 have their ups and downs. Bikes are extremely easy to drive--there's no split between front and rear brakes to worry about [...] Bikes have their control quirks; for instance, when coming out of a turn, you'll want to let go of the analog stick in order to bring yourself back up smoothly, as manually bringing your rider upright can result in serious overcorrection errors. But for the most part bikes aren't much of a challenge and, as a result, aren't really as fun as we were hoping.

Besides completely revamped career and arcade modes, PGR4 touts a dense array of online play. Games Radar sums the game's online functions:

"Online, PGR4 is as solid as ever. Bizarre encourages tomfoolery as they ask teams to beat opponents by reversing over the finish line in tandem, or pull simultaneous Endos on a bike. One neat little viral unlock requires you to beat a member of the PGR dev team online, or beat someone who has bested them."

Oh, and don't forget that PGR4 includes the mesmerizing Geometry Wars: Waves and for that we've got a review of our own. Racing fans, and, especially PGR3 fans, should not hesitate to grab this newest entry to the Project Gotham franchise.

Hey, Thanks: IGN, Gamespot & Games Radar
