Blog Post: Halo 3 Tops Japanese Sales Charts Subscribe to this RSS feed

But, on the lowest selling week of the entire year...

In Japan, the odds have been against Halo 3 for a long time. Not only is the Xbox a struggling niche commodity compared to the saliency of the almighty DS, but, Japanese gamers generally aren't interested in Halo 3's shoot-em-up first-person style. Considering these truths most analysts expected Halo 3 to struggle in the Japanese market.

Well, just as Master Chief defies the odds to defeat entire armies single-handedly, Halo 3 has defied the odds to reach the #1 spot on this week's Japanese video game sales charts, selling 59,000 copies. The top ten, seen below, comes from Media Create Inc.

1) Halo 3 - 59,000
2) Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Toki no Tankentai - 55,000
3) Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII - 54,000
4) Tamagotchi no Puchi Puchi Omisecchi: Mina San Kyu - 54,000
5) Pokemon Fushigi no Dungeon: Yami no Tankentai - 46,000
6) Bleach: Blade Battlers 2nd - 31,000
7) KanKen DS 2 + Jouyou Kanji Jiten - 28,000
8) Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX: Tag Force 2 - 28,000
9) The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - 27,000
10) Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Plus - 25,000

Although Halo 3 tops the sales list this week, it is the lowest selling week of the year. In addition the two Pokemon titles are the same (ie: Blue version v. Red version). If combined their sales would amount to 101,000 copies. Halo 3 did in fact beat the odds in Japan, but it seems like the competition was set on the Easy difficulty level.

A surprise is certainly right... I didn't think it would get a top spot at all in Japan. Well Like he said if pokemon's two version would have been compbied it would have sold more then halo 3.
