Is the constant war for greater graphics starting to inflict casualties?

GTA is a killer, in more ways than one.

GTA is a killer, in more ways than one.

Is having the latest and greatest technology the best thing for industry? Josh Valone provides an editorial on Advanced Media Network to discuss that question:

"Sony and Microsoft aren't the only ones feeling the crunch, though; developers are having a much harder time acclimating themselves to the new hardware architecture and as a result gamers are forced to wait through delays for titles like Grand Theft Auto IV. With hardware cycles being so short, it's possible the PS3 and 360 won't even come close to being fully utilized before they're replaced thanks to the longer development cycles."

Valone is right with his article entitled "Paying the Price". The negative effect is that fact developers, console manufacturers, and gamers take quite a hit. Gamers pay more for their hobbies, console manufacturers lose substantial amounts of money, and developers are forced to increase development cost and time.

But as gamers, we are accustomed to seeing bigger leaps over previous generations in artificial intelligence and graphics. Despite what anyone may say, gamers do like graphics. The 'awe factor' of seeing visually impressive graphics is what catches our attention. It has provided more immersive worlds and greater depths in gameplay.

It is more of a double-edged sword in having the latest and greatest technology.? It has it's pros and cons and also there is positives and negatives with small leaps in technology. Maybe there is just the right amount of graphical improvement to satisfy everybody, but that would be in a perfect world. But just maybe...

You see, this is why the Wii is popular these days even if the games suck. Costs less, the graphics engine is familiar to all most all developers.
