Sony confirms that it is 'obviously' considering slapping it's Playstation brand on a mobile phone.

Just keep on pretending, dude.

Just keep on pretending, dude.

When I first glanced upon the PSP I was awestruck. It was the fanciest piece of technology I'd ever seen resting in the palm of an EB Games' (soon to be Gamestop) employee. But one thing about the PSP struck me as rather odd and that was why they didn't just make the thing into a phone. The technology was obviously there. Sony was already producing phones with Erikson. And all-encompassing mobile devices were just around the corner. It seemed almost silly for Sony to stomp it's way into the portable gaming market without some kind of cell phone support -- it's one advantage they definitely have over Nintendo.

Well now Sony has a chance to redeem themselves. At Leipzig Gaming Conference Sony Erikson's, Peter Ahnegard, the head of their games division, gave PocketGamer an interview. In it he mainly discussed the possibility of a Playstation mobile phone.

Here's a clip:

"The power of the phones we're creating now is phenomenal. Smartphones like the W960, P1 and associated families have hardware acceleration and OpenGL ES and are capable of providing gaming experiences on a level similar to PSP, certainly somewhere between PS1 and PS2."

When asked about a Playstation phone Ahnegard had this to say:

"We're not launching a brand of handset simply because we can, but because we can lead up to the expectations of the consumer [...] Up until today we haven't felt we could launch a PlayStation phone because it wouldn't be recognised as a true continuation of that brand of products."

The discussion ends with Ahnegard confessing that we can expect some concrete details about this phone before Christmas, then adding.

"... but exactly which Christmas I can't confirm!"
Hey, Thanks: PocketGamer & Joystiq

I had my PSP in class last year, while i was telling my teacher all that it can do he asked me " Does it have a phone" i said no. Then i wonder it could have a phone i mean it has all this other non-gaming related stuff. It would be nice if it did, but its okay if it doesn't i mean it is mainly a gaming device.

tisk tisk sony still getting off track. videogame consoles are for videogames just think how much cheaper\more powerful the PSP could have been if they didn't add all that extra crap that detracts from the games. But if there trying challenge the iphone I'm already seeing flashbacks when the PSP was dubbed "the DS killer" or killzone "halo killer" And we all know how that went. both still pretty good but far from klilling there rival.
