With GTA delayed, some other sandbox city-in-havoc action games are getting attention. Here's a new game taking things in an entirely different direction.
Prototype has us jumping for joy.
Sierra's in house studio Radical Entertainment has announced its new upcoming game, Prototype, slated for the summer of 2008. Shacknews details a short premise of the game:
" Prototype's lead character--a guy haunted by his past and fighting a secret war in New York City--is not Max Payne, but Alex Mercer, a very different character. Mercer can use shapeshifting powers to steal the skills and abilities of his enemies."
Radical is focusing on a free form movement, open-world which will provide an over-the-top style of gameplay. Radical's President Kelly Zmak states that the protagonist will be able to run, jump, and destroy anything.
Radical Entertainment is known for The Simpsons: Hit & Run, The Simpsons: Road Rage, and Scarface: The World Is Yours. And Prototype seems like a natural step up from it's previous open-world games, but there are other notable games which feature a sandbox gameplay in a New York setting. With True Crime: New York City and GTA IV tackling NYC, will Prototype have the chops to represent the world's most popular city. What makes Prototype particularly interesting is Alex Mercers' ability to shapeshift. We're excited to see how this is going to be incorporated into the gameplay, and it'll be quite interesting to see how Prototype will unfold.
Prototype will be available for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

Sounds cool to me. Anything that lets you shapeshift and copy enemies abilities Kirby style is good in my book.

Summer 2008 is a looong time but I'm sure they will use that time wisely to perfect the game.

A lot of stuff happens in NY when will it be the other cities turn? Like for instant Chicago. I want to play a game and say look theres my house... lets break in it.

Oh yes i read up about this game. The premise sounds very interesting to me. I'm becoming more impressed with this generation of games. While there's of course your standard games you already know will hit (i'm looking at you Halo, Resistance and Haze) there's also some more interesting concepts being put into play. Games like Assassin's Creed, Fracture, Portal, Saboteur and L.A Noir to list a few upcoming titles that fit the bill in my opinion. And now Prototype seems to look to invigorate the open ended sandbox type of play.
Also something interesting i heard is that a third game is being made in the Ico / Shadow of Colossus gameline.
