Blog Post: Console Download Stores: Could be Awesomer... Subscribe to this RSS feed

Downloadable content is all the rage, but the buying could be better. Here's two improvements: one real, and one we wished were real.

Sony, do this. We like not ugly.

Sony, do this. We like not ugly.

I've been a big fan of the downloadable content services on all three new-gen consoles. In the age of five dollar games and two dollar bonus items, I'd venture to say that I've spent more on downloadable wares than I have on the big-budget boxed titles. That's why a pair of Kotaku posts today have caught my eye.

First is the report that the Wii's Virtual Console now accepts USB keyboard support. While it sounds pretty trivial, for Virtual Console addicts, it's a godsend. Unlike other consoles, the Wii can't "remember" your credit card info. While it might prove to be useful if your system ever gets jacked, entering your card number, expiration, and address could get tiresome when using the system's virtual keyboad. Kotaku bemoans the fact that the web browser is incompatible with the keyboard thus far, but you can get the internet on any old computer. I prefer easier access to near-perfect classic console emulation... which I guess I could also get on a PC. But I digress.

Kotaku's also picked up on a thread on PS3forums where an enterprising artist has redesigned the look of the PlayStation Network store. The store, which right now is a slow, unresponive, and clunky mess, looks like it navigates like a dream in the concept photos. You can see plenty of impressive improvements in the thread, as well as some wishful upcoming shop items--let's get those old school RE titles as downloadable PSP games, please.

Hey, thanks: Kotaku

I'm digging the keyboard support, but they need to make it compatible for everything the requires typing otherwise it's useless. PSN, I don't like the fact that the needed to pull some games down due to taking out the emotion and graphics synthesizer of the new 80gb PS3. They better hurry up with the software emulation patches.

Hey, wait a mintue... "awesomer" isn't a word.
