Blog Post: id is teeming with Rage Subscribe to this RSS feed

id brought a new game to QuakeCon, and true to form, it was a one-syllable word. But was it one we've heard already?

This past weekend at Quakecon, id Software finally announced its new game running on the id Tech 5 engine and it's not what we expected as Gamespot states:

"You know all about Doom and Quake. Now get ready for Rage. Famed programmer John Carmack announced id Software's newest game at QuakeCon 2007 in Dallas today, and it represents a departure of sorts from the company's traditional first-person shooters."

While Rage will feature gun toting action, it will also incorporate adventure and racing elements as well. This is a big departure for id as it is typically known for gun blazing scare-fests like Doom and Quake. What's more shocking is what John Carmack, creator of the new engine, said about how much data the game holds:

"Carmack noted during his keynote that the game has about 80GB of uncompressed data, and even compressed it will fill up two full DVDs for the PC, Mac, and Xbox 360 versions, and one Blu-ray disc for the PS3 version. Another way to put it is that the two biggest levels in the game would fill up about 10,000 monitors each, he estimated."

The new engine showcased very detailed surrounding from small to large objects with massive environments, as seen in the trailer below. It's no wonder why Carmack stated that it contained nearly 80 gigabytes of uncompressed data. From the facial expression to precise detail on a fly, it all looks beautiful.

Out of the shadows and into the light, Rage looks like a very bold step in a new direction for id, but it doesn't look like it will disappoint either. Rage will ship for PC, Mac, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3.

80GB of game stuff? Goddamn!! It'll be the 1st Xbox 360 game to use 2 discs. I can see the Sony fanboys bragging about how they only need 1 disc to make the game fit in it.
