Blog Post: EA vs. 2K, eh? Subscribe to this RSS feed
EA's head honcho is prepared for a new-gen pigskin battle.
Like Tinactin, 2K Sports is tough-actin'.
After acquiring the NFL and NFLPA licenses, EA Sports thought that it ran its football competition out of town. It looked like Madden NFL was on top of the world, but 2K Sports wormed it's way around the licenses and resurrect football's greats with All Pro Football 2K8. In an article by Gamasutra, Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello wants to keep the football greats in their past:
""When you've got a competitor like Take-Two on the sports side, and they launch a football title using some of the industry legends, you want to make sure that ends up being a blip and is not repeatable, because we like to defend our franchises aggressively.""
When EA bought out the NFL licenses, many gamers were upset that 2K Sports' cannot produce any more NFL football games. Looks like Riccitiello wants to do that again.
Is it fair for EA to push around its competition? Absolutely not. Competition drives others to be better which is why quite a few Madden fans turned into 2K fans for the better football game.
EA has gained notoriety within the industry for what many consider "dirty ticks" to drive out the competition. For that, a lot of heat has come down upon EA. If EA would just focus on creating a better game than the competition, then maybe some of the hatred would die down and gain some respect.
Hey, thanks: Gamasutra
