Halo 3 is coming on September 25th. It's early and awesome, but ultimately boring. What could Microsoft do to spruce up the release date?

Eh...where's the excitement in that date?

Halo 3's Beta launched yesterday with an extra bonus for eager fans--Bungie confirmed the game's release date of Tuesday, September 25, 2007. Yes, that's way before most people expected. Yes, it's perfectly timed as to allow the rest of this year's top titles to shine. Yes, the early release isn't too far from the end of the Beta, so gamers won't suffer too much.

It's just that the release date is sooo boring.

Having spent five years of my life in gaming retail, and just as many as a journalist, I know the right release date can work wonders. Nintendo has made a few November Sundays memorable with their weekend console releases. Microsoft has a legacy of releasing big things in November each year; Halo 2 and Gears of War during the first week, the original Xbox, Xbox Live, and the Zune (don't laugh) during the second, and the 360 and it's Video Marketplace during the third. Now, unless the company's got something big up its sleeve--the multiplatform GTA doesn't count--November's looking just a little more empty.

Bottom line; Halo 3 could very well be the defining game of this console generation, and it deserves a date on par with Sega Dreamcast's 9/9/99 or Mortal Monday. 09/25/07 just doesn't catch the eye... might I suggest 09/08/07? Or better yet, 07/07/07? At the very least, give it a cool nickname like "Emergence Day".

I thought they had that cool tag line "Finish the fight!". Well if you know anything about Microsoft, don't put it past them to have an ace up their sleeve. They will probably throw a viral campaign out there soon enough
