Blog Post: More pop-culture mining: Another Simpsons game Subscribe to this RSS feed

The show may have its best days behind it, but how did the media react to the announcement of a new Simpsons game?

mmm... inter-company reference.

mmm... inter-company reference.

I've got a special place in my heart for Homer. Hell, just about everyone in America does. I've often claimed The Simpsons to be the greatest thing TV ever spawned from its unholy womb. At least for me, though, its really fallen off in the last few years. Don't get me wrong, there are still good episodes, but the show actually drops stinkers nowadays. In its prime, you'd never see a groaner. Sure, some jokes weren't hilarious, but they didn't make you roll your eyes. And now, after such a decline in quality, they decide to make a movie? I'm wary of that venture. Now there's a game based on said movie waiting in the wings.

Just like with Napoleon Dynamite, a Simpsons game has to either copy jokes or come up with new ones that live up to fans' expectations. The former requires laziness, the latter needs a crapload of work. And then, completely separate from the jokes, you have to make a good game. Hence, the shaky Simpsons track record. Thankfully, the game is being penned by scribes of the series, though EA hasn't declared who exactly wrote the script.

Destructoid shares my view about the show, saying, "The Simpsons used to be such a great series ... that is until it became a watered down, bastardized version of its former self." Yet they are still upbeat about the game in general, commenting "it all sounds good in the hood". PressTheButtons was equally optimistic, commenting, "The game looks clever...I mean, c'mon, Medal of Homer? How can you not love that?"

The game does have an interesting premise (the Simpsons know that they're in a videogame). We'll just have to wait and see.

Hey, thanks: Destructoid, and PressTheButtons

Last few years??? The decline of The Simpsons started since the 9nth season. And now they can't get a decent writer. I'll .ll see the movie because I'm a loyal Simpsons fan no doubt. Hit & Run was decent. You couldn't do alot. Road Rage was bad. And all the other Bart Simpson video games...well that a different story. Maybe this Simpsons' game will get it right. I'll give them credit, "Medal of Homer". That's clever. It would be neat to have Abe Simpson relieve his Hellfish days in WWII with Mr. Burns.

Blackbolt, you are totally right. The Simpsons are crap nowadays, it have been surpassed by American Dad and Family Guy, they are much clever, fresh and political incorrect, that's what hte Simpsons used to be! Anyone knows if there is an American Dad videogame or if it is planned? I discovered an online game americandadvsfamilyguy which is a hilarius parody of street fighter. It's good because as the article says is definitely funny, and still a good game (for being an online freebie of course), after playing that game I'd like to see what these people could do wiht more budget, I think they could come with some serious stuff.
