Blog Post: Will Napoleon Dynamite blow up in the game industry's face? Subscribe to this RSS feed

Crave has revealed it will release portable games based on the Indie hit, and the Internet sounded off with a collective "Huh?"

Strangely, I never saw a preview for Napoleon Dynamite. I say it's strange because I'm a movie geek and I usually am aware of just about everything coming out. I never even saw the movie until it was on video, and although one of my best friends recommended it to me, I hadn't heard any real "word of mouth." So I went into it with zero expectations or preconceptions. I loved it. I still love it. I actually think it gets better the more you watch it. Of course, I understand perfectly why some people don't like it.

However, I don't get why anyone would make it into a game, let alone several years too late. I guess it's possible to make a good game out of it, but that would require effort and talent. I can't say whether Crave will supply one or the other. I could swear I played something by them, but I didn't see anything I've played on their website. Anyway, they made something called The Bible Game. Hmmm. Is there a connection? Some people may not know, but Napoleon Dynamite is an unofficial Mormon movie.

I get the feeling Kotaku isn't a fan of the film of the Latter Day Saints:

I'm just in stitches remembering all the hilarious catch phrases and wacky mannerisms of that lovable anti-hero and I don't think I'll ever tire of his antics. If you can find some way to force feed me this underdog hilarity like some I'm a fattened foie gras goose, make it happen, Crave. More Napoleon Dynamite, please!

Destructoid weighed in, saying "With moves like this, Crave is edging closer and closer to catching a swarm of locusts in the junk." , while Wired's Game|Life had its own reservations, noting "Well, better late than never, I suppose. Actually, nothing against Crave, but I'm guessing 'never' probably would have been better in this case."

Prediction: the game is either going to shamelessly pack in direct quotes from the movie for its jokes, or just do derivations of them...or it's going to try to make up its own jokes in the movie's vein, and how likely will that go well? At least it'll be better than Nacho Libre.

Hey, thanks: Kotaku, Destructoid, and Game|Life
