Blog Post: Prepare to be offended, Uwe Boll-style! Subscribe to this RSS feed
A short clip of Uwe Boll's upcoming film Postal, based on the infamous game, has appeared on the Internet. And whoa boy, it's a doozy.
I realize that, particularly when talking to gamers, Uwe Boll is an easy target. But I'll be damned if the man isn't trying with every ounce of his being to make himself a target. A snippet from 1UP.com reveals that a brief clip from Boll's latest masterpiece somehow innocently made its way into cyberspace.
Uwe Boll drinking. Undoubtedly on the job.
If you don't know anything about the Postal movie, indulge me for a moment. If you ignore the idea that videogame-movie adaptations are a genre on their own, Boll has basically covered horror movies for most of his career. Although, I swear to god, he actually tackled the serious issue of school shootings once. Despite all the cruddy "Is he taking this seriously, holy crap he is," entries into cinema, Boll actually broke out with a "comedy" called German Fried Movie. I haven't seen it, and I know it's dangerous to make assumptions, but based on Boll's ability to effectively render horror (and Stephen King, master of horror himself will tell you that horror and comedy are closely related), I would guess it's not so funny.
My assumption is further bolstered by the latest clip from Postal. You see, Boll has returned to comedy. If you're wondering why I've held out on linking the clip, it's because I want to give you plenty of warning. It is a joke about 9/11. Of course, jokes are supposed to be funny, but this?
I'm not easily offended. I also normally wouldn't come across as a flag-wavin' American. But it rubs me the wrong way when Boll, who hasn't earned any tenure in the movie or game industries, and certainly hasn't the proper perspective on the tradgedy (calling it his favorite TV moment in an IGN article), has the gall to make light of 3,000 American deaths. What's worse, he manages to make the game industry look bad. Those who think of games as crass, irresponsible entertainment will only have their attitudes reinforced. Great job, Dr. Boll. You continue to prove yourself to be a powerful force in setting back the tentative progress that games are trying to make as a mainstream form of entertainment.
Hey, thanks: 1UP
