Blog Post: The WiiHelm: Yep, I got fooled Subscribe to this RSS feed

You've gotta get up pretty early in the morning of April 1st to fool this game editor. One retailer managed to crack the defenses of this well-prepared journalist.

Bravo. You got me, guys.

Bravo. You got me, guys.

There seems to be a malaise among the gaming community in recent years when it comes to fooling the public. Whereas pre-internet gags like Sheng Long being unlockable in Street Fighter II had gamers flummoxed, the age of the internet has been bad for the spring's finest holiday, as jaded gamers have been able to discern and detect potential tricks a mile away. I like to think of myself as pretty impervious to 4/1 trickery, strengthened by the LamePros, Lame Informers, and EGM April Fools jokes of the world. Unfortunately, one site managed to pull the wool over this poor reporter's eyes. Thinkgeek, an online store that offers nerd-friendly t-shirts and oddball accessories like the Binary Code Clock, sent me a suspiciously late email this evening touting a newly-available accessory for the Nintendo Wii--the WiiHelm! According to the product page, the WiiHelm offers the ultimate hands-free motion-sensing gaming 'sperience:

The WiiHelm works great with all of your favorite Wii games and the included foot pedal allows easy button presses using minimal toe effort. Plus the amazing Wiimote Saf-T-Lok technology and double reinforced head strap save you thousands of dollars in damaged flat-screen repair charges.

Once I was ready to plunk down the $25 for this curious new accessory, I was greeted with a "Fooled you!" checkout page. Well played, ThinkGeek. How'd they do it? Well, they knew their audience and their product and picked something that was slightly insane, but within reason. Just about every site and mag that's tried that this year hasn't. Sadly, I would've paid good money for that wonderful, wonderful helmet. Wouldn't you?

A WiiHelm might be kinda cool....plus, they could tap the small but influential I-Wanna-Look-Like-Tron market....

I'm still waiting for Nintendo to finally say the Wii was a joke and release their real console.
