Blog Post: Final Fantasy Tactics has multiplayer. The PSP has worth now. Subscribe to this RSS feed
The ability to fight other players in an iteration of the best tactical game of all time? Yes, please.
The original Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games of all time. I've played through most of the regular Final Fantasy games, and have been quite a fan. However, something that's always bothered me about the Final Fantasy series was the relative shallowness of the battles. I mean, really, how many times have you rapidly hit the same buttons over and over to get each of your characters to do the normal attack command on random enemies? How many times have you repeatedly used the same uber spell over and over?
FFT with multiplayer? You're "Lion" to me!
When Final Fantasy Tactics came out, I didn't really know what the deal was, but I bought it anyway. What I fell into was a crazy, heated love affair. In other Final Fantasy games the random battles quickly get tiresome and annoying. But in Final Fantasy Tactics, every random encounter could become an epic struggle for survival. And it was oh so satisfying.
Yet the huge thing that tactics lacked was any kind of multiplayer. I remember wishing so badly that I could play my friends. I was in college at the time, and my roommate, who was a Final Fantasy fans as well, had watched me play Tactics for a long time. I kept trying to convince him to play it, but for some reason he always told me that it didn't look interesting to play. The fool. Somehow he finally did sit down to play it, and he was doomed. He ended up playing that game even more hard-core than I did. Man, it would've been so great if we could've played against each other.
And now, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War is coming to PSP in Japan. There's no official announcement for an American release, but we can expect it some time soon. Whether the multiplayer is possible over the Internet isn't clear yet. Either way, tactics fans will take what they can get. Crap, now all I need is a PSP.
