#5 Leech Gun- Prey - [ Xbox 360 ]

Melding alien technology with human weaponry yielded some strange but sinister weaponry in Prey. The best of the bunch was the Leech Gun, which could make use of various types of ammunition located at reloading stations. You start off with Plasma and Ice ammo, which give you your standard flamethrower and freezegun capabilities. Later on, you can make use of Lightning and Sun ammo which allow you to shoot powerful beams (Lightning has short rifle-like shots, Sun is a steady "Hammer of Dawn" style beam) that can obliterate your enemy with ease. With a weapon that versatile, you might just forget about the rest of Prey's impressive cadre. Please don't.

#4 Armacham Type-7 Particle Weapon- F.E.A.R. - [ Xbox 360 ]

While it may not have the coolest name, F.E.A.R.'s Armacham Type-7 Particle Weapon makes up for it with its unprecedented ability to sear the flesh off of opponents. That's an effect that simply couldn't have been done properly on previous-gen console. Now, we expect (and await) other guns to adopt this sick and twisted feature.

#3 Bullseye- Resistance: Fall of Man - [ PS3 ]

The Bullseye from Resistance is a FPS rarity--a gun you pick up early on that retains its usefulness throughout the game. It's also a gun that requires a level of dexterity few other weapons demand. If you can land the first tracking shot, it can make combat easy, negating any use of cover your enemy might try to employ, while allowing you to empty your clip without having to step into the line of fine. For anyone who's looked at Halo's Needler with a sense of disappointment, the Bullseye is a perfect example of that weapon's potential realized.

#2 Spartan Laser- Halo 3 - [ Xbox 360 ]

Of the many potential weapons available in Halo 3, we're most excited about the Spartan Laser. While the Rocket Launcher was a fine anti-vehicle weapon, the Spartan Laser which should allow you to stop a Warthog in its tracks without the worry of getting caught in the explosion. We're sure this one's gonna do some pretty serious damage should you decide to train it on a human opponent as well, which should make this gun a little more alluring.

#1 Chainsaw Bayonet- Gears of War - [ Xbox 360 ]

Gears of War may not have the imaginative weapons of many of this generation's shooters, but the Chainsaw Bayonet has such a rich blend of simplicity and brutality that you'll be hard pressed to figure out a gun that you'll enjoy wielding as much. Any gun that can take assuage our disgust over the weak-looking Hammer of Dawn--more like "Hammer of Yawn" amirite?--is damn impressive in our book. It's unbelievable that it took this long for a game to combine two great weapons--the chainsaw and the machine gun--into one deliciously bloody package, but we're glad Epic got the job done.
