#5 Shrink-Ray (Duke Nukem 3D) - [ PC ]

This innovative weapon titillated gamers way back in 1996, and it's not hard to see why. What other gun lets you shrink opponents down to rodent-size, only to be squashed under your mighty boot? Talk about cutting an enemy down to size. But there's one key defense: you can counteract the effects by gulping a bottle of steroids. Hey, The Duke isn't exactly known for his subtlety.

#4 Plasma Rifle (Doom 3) - [ PC ]

When you're facing an enraged Hell Knight, there's just no substitute for the flesh-melting Plasma Rifle. Not only does it produce a strangely satisfying "boo-boo-boo" sound effect, every shot leaves a faint, sparkling trail of molten plasma dust in its wake. So you get to revel in melting your enemies and groove on the trippy visuals and sounds at the same time. And in the end, there's just nothing like the sickly-sweet smell of charred flesh.

#3 Gravity Gun (Half-Life 2) - [ PC ]

Okay, okay, so it's a no-brainer. And for good reason! After all, what other weapon lets you hurl flaming barrels, deadly buzz saw blades, and explosive CO2 containers at your enemies? Half-Life 2's Gravity Gun deserves serious props for re-inventing the way we kill in first-person shooters. Rumor is, the upgraded model featured in the upcoming Aftermath expansion will let you pull off some seriously crazy stuff...but you didn't hear that from us.

#2 Double-Barreled Shotgun (Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil) - [ PC ]

BFG? BFD. As every red-blooded Doom fan knows, the Double-Barreled Shotgun is one of the most devastating weapons to ever exist on God's green earth (or His red Mars, in this case). You never forget your first experience with the Double-Barreled Shotgun, a flesh-rending weapon that can wipe out a foe with a one blast. For the record, we prefer the model that was featured in Doom 2. The double-barreled shotgun found in the new Doom 3 expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil, suffers from a Civil War-era reload time. Still, a Double-Barreled Shotgun is a Double-Barreled Shotgun. We'll take two, please.

#1 The Pistol (Halo: Combat Evolved) - [ Xbox ]

Pound for pound, it's pretty much impossible to find a more effective weapon than Halo's controversial Pistol. Part of that has to do with the fact that this particular Pistol has more in common with a sniper rifle than your standard small-caliber sidearm; clicking on the right analog stick gives the user a zoomed view, which is perfect for perforating enemy noggins. It's got a speedy firing rate and a quick reload time, to boot. The Pistol is only so-so for close-range combat (which is where the Shotgun reigns supreme), but for medium and long-range combat, there is no equal.
