Net Ten: The Most Kickass FPS Guns Ever (page 1) Subscribe to this RSS feed

You think your puny little Magnum is the cock of the walk? Puh-lease. Drop that pea-shooter and lock and load with some of the most bitchin' firepower ever seen in a video game.

#10 Concussion Rifle (Dark Forces) - [ PC ]

No game before or after it has ever recreated this weapon of small-scale destruction. Combining the splash of a rocket launcher and the power of a rail gun, the concussion rifle delivered devastating blue explosions of death that sent enemies flying. The downsides of this gun were that it could kill you when fired at close range, and had a mysterious trajectory that made it lousy for shooting enemies above you.

#9 Singularity Generator (Blood 2: The Chosen) - [ PC ]

Though the Blood series was, at best, a cult hit, true FPS nuts won't forget its uniquely awesome arsenal. Take the wicked Singularity Generator, for instance. It projects an enormous disruption in the fabric of space/time, literally turning an enemy inside-out. It's essentially the first "black hole gun," and it's one of the most distinctive and addictive weapons ever showcased in an FPS game.

#8 The Energy Sword (Halo 2) - [ Xbox ]

This double-bladed scourge is possibly the only truly kick-ass melee weapon ever featured in an FPS game. Sure, Doom 3's chainsaw has the cool factor, but it doesn't allow you to effortlessly crush heavily-armed opponents with one swipe, now does it? Simply vicious.

#7 The Voodoo Doll (Blood/Blood 2) - [ PC ]

Bullets, plasma and grenades will only get you so far. If you want to take carnage to the next level, a excellent alternative is the infamous Voodoo Doll. Not only is the Voodoo Doll morbidly amusing, it's deadly effective; stab the doll in the arm to make your enemy drop his weapon, or stab it in the eyes to inflict temporary blindness. Then there's the BFG-like alternate fire Hex that will drop a man to his knees with one blast. Not bad for a child's play thing.

#6 Rail Gun (Quake 4) - [ PC ]

Truly a tool for the professional killer, the Rail Gun was introduced in Quake 2 and quickly became a series signature. Real-life rail guns (currently in the experimentation phase) work by firing a highly-magnetized magnetized ceramic or Teflon slug at an enemy. In the Quake games, these slugs can pierce through the body of one foe to strike another. And another, and another. Not bad! But it takes a ton of finesse to master this pinpoint-precise death-dealer; simply pointing at an enemy will often result in failure. Instead, the secret is to rely on your immediate aiming instinct (sometimes called "The Force" by pros). Try it--you'll be surprised at the results.
