The legacy of World War II continues to capture the imagination of gamers everywhere.

#10 Secret Weapons of the German Luftwaffe (PC) - [ PC ]

If you get nostalgic about World War II, you ought to get nostalgic about this classic WWII aerial combat game. It's pre-windows software, but it did a great job of producing arcade style flying and fighting. By today's standards this game is definitely a dinosaur in many respects but twas a time when it was cutting edge. The Lucasarts crew made a brilliant creative call to revive actual experimental aircraft from the drawing boards of the Luftwaffe. Seeing these aircraft, which are at once "futuristic," formidable and sometimes bizarre, in motion is a treat in itself.

#9 Medal of Honor (PS) - [ Playstation ]

It's time to recognize this dusty war veteran. Medal of Honor arguably revived the World War II action genre in the "modern" console age. The FPS action still holds up fairly well, although the near brain-dead German troopers become more laughable with age. The story is the thing though. Sure it's all about WWII, but Medal of Honor was one of the first proponents of historically accurate storylines. It sparked interest in some little known but vital wartime campaigns, and does an excellent job of setting up scenarios with actual wartime footage. Medal of Honor is a classic.

#8 Secret Weapons over Normandy (PS2, Xbox) - [ PS2 ]

This is not an aircraft sim by any means, but it excels as an arcade style, aerial combat game. You can fly 20 WWII aircraft, representing the Allied and Axis airforces, over 30 missions above Europe and over the Pacific, too. The controls are a standout with a sort of first-person cockpit view. There?s battle planning involved, too, and you can command a wingman during your sorties. Unfortunately, the series has since flown off the Lucasarts radar screens (no doubt they have another ?War? on their minds right now).

#7 Medal of Honor: European Assault (Xbox) - [ Xbox ]

Here's another game on the preview track, but it gets notice here because so far European Assault has the Medal of Honor back on track. At least the FPS gameplay is tighter than it's ever been, and the enemy A.I. is much more savvy and vicious. This version will incorporate squad-based gameplay, however, placing three other soldiers at your command. The jury's still out on this new gameplay feature. The question will be can European Assault make an assault on Call of Duty 2?

#6 Call of Duty 2 (PC) - [ PC ]

You're not going to be able to play this game for PC, Xbox, or PS2 until the fall, but we're adding it to the list anyway on the strength of an awesome E3 demo. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault knocked your socks off with its Saving Private Ryan-style D-Day landing, Call of Duty 2 advanced two notches higher on the strength of its amazing opening level that recreates the D-Day assault by the U.S. Rangers on the German guns planted on the bluffs of Pointe du Hoc. The attack was impossible and vicious and the PC demo was a knock out.
