Feature: GameStop Stops GTA: San Andreas Subscribe to this RSS feed
Good luck finding GTA: San Andreas for sale--thanks to the coordinated efforts of retailers like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Target, the game is practically impossible to find. Unless you're willing to pay 80 bucks on eBay, that is.
Where are you, GTA?
GameStop, a leading game retailer, has confirmed that it will no longer sell Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas now that the ESRB has retroactively slapped the game with an Adults Only rating.
GameStop is sending all new copies of the game back to publisher Take-Two, and will also cease selling used versions of the game, taking a 1 million dollar hit to do so.
The game has effectively been locked out of mainstream retail establishments. Stores that have pulled the game--and in some cases everything San Andreas-related--include powerhouses like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, Circuit City, EB Games, and Sears, among many others.
Slightly more shocking is the fact that direct-mail rental outlet GameFly (a Netflix rival) has even pulled the game, and Amazon is only selling it through its Marketplace proxy vendors; it's not available for direct purchase from the online retail giant.
The retail lockout has proven to be a boon for enterprising eBay users, however: sealed copies of the Xbox and PC versions are currently under heavy bidding, and are fetching prices upward of $75.
