Get ready, survival horror fans! Capcom has announced Resident Evil 5 (aka BioHazard) for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. We only need to know one thing: when can we play it?

Historically, Capcom has tended to keep loyal fans waiting and waiting and waiting for hit sequels--Street Fighter 3 is a prime example.

But all that's in the past; Resident Evil 5, or "BioHazard 5" as it's known outside the U.S., has already reared its ghoulish head, just six months after the Gamecube release of Resident Evil 4. And the good news is that it looks simply stunning. See for yourself--the video is available right here.

Resident Evil 5 will appear on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 Judging by the leaked Japanese promo video, here's what we know about Resident Evil 5:

  • -- the scruffy protagonist is either Carlos (a side character from RE3), or a new character altogether
  • -- zombies have seemingly returned, despite having not appeared in the last game
  • -- the zombies, from what it appears, have gained the ability to run (in a nod to modern zombie flicks like Danny Boyle's '28 Days Later' and Zach Snyder's 'Dawn of the Dead' remake)

  • Aside from that, all we have to refer to is Capcom's investor press release, released in Japan on July 20th, which is woefully short on information, and the latest issue of Famitsu.

Conspicuously absent in the announcement is any mention of a Nintendo Revolution version of Resident Evil 5. This is notworthy because Resident Evil 4 was originally released as an exclusive title for Nintendo's Gamecube. And though it sold well--NPD data suggests sales upward of 500,000 units through April of 2005--the game wasn't an earth-shaking blockbuster. Capcom later announced that they would release RE4 for the PlayStation 2, and that version is due out this fall.

By switching allegiances to the Xbox 360 and PS3, it's hard not to wonder whether Capcom's actions speak louder than words.
